Servicing and Maintaining Your Dryer Vents

Deitch Energy LLC is now offering Dryer Vent Cleaning. Perhaps this is not something to which you have given much thought, but here are reasons why this is an important service for you to consider:

Not all debris/lint is captured by the lint filter installed with the dryer.

This residual debris is carried out via the dryer exhaust into the vent. As the debris accumulates, air flow diminishes.

With decreased air flow, your dryer’s efficiency decreases. Running at less than optimal efficiency, more energy is required to operate the dryer at a greater cost to you.

Diminished airflow will also cause the motor of your dryer to work harder, potentially decreasing the life-span of your appliance. Lint/debris in your dryer’s vent is a potential fire hazard. Here is an excerpt from Consumer Reports .

Improper dryer vents are a much bigger and more common safety problem. Here are a few tips to keep your clothes dryer running safely and efficiently:

Use metal dryer ducts to help prevent dryer fires.
Consumer Reports says that flexible dryer ducts made of foil or plastic are the most problematic because they can sag and let lint build up at low points.
Ridges can also trap lint. Metal ducts, either flexible or solid, are far safer because they don't sag, so lint is less likely to build up.
In addition, if a fire does start, a metal duct is more likely to contain it.

No matter which kind of duct you have, you should clean it regularly. In addition, remove the visible lint from the lint screen each time you use your dryer. This not only will reduce the risk of a fire, but your clothes will dry faster and your dryer will use less energy. If dryer film is a worry, there is certainly no harm in occasionally cleaning the lint filter with warm soapy water and a small brush.

Clean inside, behind, and underneath the dryer, where lint can also build up.

Take special care drying clothes stained with volatile chemicals such as gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents, or finishing oils and stains. Wash the clothing more than once to minimize the amount of these chemicals on the clothing and line dry instead of using a dryer.

Avoid using liquid fabric softener on all-cotton clothing made of fleece, terry cloth, or velour. In our flammability tests, liquid fabric softener added to rinse water accelerated the burning speed of these fabrics. If you want a softener, use dryer sheets instead.

Buy dryers that use moisture sensors rather than ordinary thermostats to end the auto-dry cycle. Thermostats can allow the dryer to run longer than necessary.

Occasionally wipe the sensor with a soft cloth or cotton ball and rubbing alcohol to keep it functioning accurately. Sensors are usually located on the inside of the dryer, just below the door opening, and can be hard to find. They are usually two curved metallic strips, shaped somewhat like the letter "C".

BTUs: What are they? They're short for "British Thermal Units" and refer to the number of thermal units of heat they provide per hour. So how do you determine what size air conditioner is right for you?

Answer these questions:

How large is your home? How many windows are in it?
How much shade is on the windows, walls and roof?
How much insulation is in the ceilings and walls?
How much air leaks into your home from outside?
How much heat comes from the occupants and appliances in your home

One of our experienced home comfort advisors who will work out the calculation procedures for sizing central air conditioners as provided by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Usually this involves a simple computer calculation based on these procedures.

National minimum standards for central air conditioners require a SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) of 9.7 and 10.0, for single-package and split-systems, respectively. But you do not need to settle for the minimum standard-there is a wide selection of units with SEERs reaching nearly 17. Before 1979, the SEERs of central air conditioners ranged from 4.5 to 8.0. Replacing a 1970s-era central air conditioner with a SEER of 6 with a new unit having a SEER of 12 will cut your air conditioning costs in half.

The bigger the better? Not so…

First of all, a larger air conditioner costs more in every way. It simply uses more electricity, which is expensive. And if the size of your air conditioner is larger than necessary it will cycle on and off more frequently, reducing its efficiency. Frequent cycling makes indoor temperatures fluctuate resulting in a less comfortable environment. More frequent cycling also inhibits moisture removal. And in humid climates, removing moisture is essential for acceptable comfort. In the end, all that cycling just wears out the compressor and electrical parts of your air conditioner faster.

What Does Weather Mean to You?

Trivia: What is a Degree Day?

A "degree day" is a unit used in estimating the fuel consumption for a building/home; equal to the number of degrees that the mean temperature, for a 24-hour day, is below the “base temperature”; the base temperature is taken as 65ºF in the US.

Deitch Energy LLC will also provide deliveries on a “will call” basis. This means the consumer will monitor their tank levels and call the office when in need of oil. A notice of 48 hours is needed for these deliveries. Consumers should call the office when their tank level is no lower than ¼ of a tank to avoid running out of oil.
